In the recent past a religious head of this community was murdered in Vienna. In the circumstances Ravidasia (Chamar) community went ahead with establishing their own religion named ‘Ravidassia’. Its emblem has ‘Hari’ in it. Some people opine that it should have been ‘Ravi’ instead.

वर्ष 1920 में एम.जी.डब्ल्यू. ब्रिंग्स द्वारा लिखित ‘दि चमार्स’ नामक पुस्तक में 1156 जातियों के ‘चमार’ होने का उल्लेख किया था. फिर मुहिम चली. ‘चमार’ शब्द के प्रति बड़े पैमाने पर घृणा की लहरचली. इसका प्रयोजन दलित जातियों में भीतरी दरार पैदा करना था. यह प्रचार इतना विषैला था कि इसके कारण अन्य दलित जातियाँ जो पहले ‘चमार’ शब्द से परहेज़ नहीं करती थीं वे स्वयं को चमार शब्द से दूर करने लगीं.
